Ligue 1 – The value of OM’s workforce according to CIES
The traditional weekly CIES letter, published on Monday, this time focused on the estimated value of the 98 clubs constituting the five « big » European leagues (Premier League, Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga, Ligue 1). In Ligue 1, the least valued championship of the big-5 with a total of 3.4 billion euros according to the Swiss institute, PSG obviously comes first.
The day after the 9th day of Ligue 1, ended Sunday evening with a spectacular Rhône-Alpes derby between AS Saint-Etienne and Olympique Lyonnais (1-1), the Football Observatory at the International Study Center du sport (CIES) has unveiled its ranking of the estimated valuation of the strength of the championship, on the transfer market. Unsurprisingly, PSG are in first place with a team estimated at 808 million euros. On the continental level, on the other hand, the capital club only comes to eighth position in a ranking dominated by Manchester City (1.280 billion euros), Manchester United (1.214 billion euros) and Chelsea ( 946 M €).
After PSG, we find, far behind, AS Monaco, whose workforce is estimated at € 335 million. Lille OSC follows on the third step of the podium (298 M €). Olympique Lyonnais (€ 292m) and Stade Rennais FC (€ 283m) then come fourth and fifth. OGC Nice (246 M €), Olympique de Marseille (182 M €), RC Lens (114 M €) and Stade de Reims (109 M €) follow. ASSE, the red lantern of the championship on the evening of the 9th round, made its appearance in tenth place with a workforce all the same valued at more than 100 M € (102 M € to be exact). Stade Brestois 29 (101 M €) and FC Metz (88 M €) are installed in eleventh and twelfth places.
Historic clubs in the French championship, FC Nantes (€ 73 million) and the Girondins de Bordeaux (€ 69 million) arrive at a lower rank, in fourteenth and fifteenth places, behind Montpellier HSC (€ 79 million). Despite their relatively undervalued squads, FC Lorient (€ 67 million) and Angers SCO (€ 57 million) remind them that money is not a guarantee of success in football with good seventh and fourth places on the sports plan. Finally, the two promoted to the elite, Clermont Foot 63 (40 M €) and ESTAC Troyes (39 M €), close this ranking established on the basis of the algorithm exclusively developed by the Observatoire du football au CIES.
