Leylah Fernandez advances to the quarterfinals at Roland-Garros

The Italian Martina Trevisan, 59th in the world, and the young Quebecer Leylah Fernandez, 18th in the world at 19, will face each other in the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros.

If the 28-year-old Italian had already reached this level of the competition two years ago when she left the qualifications, this is the first time that Fernandez, surprise finalist of the last US Open, will be there.

Trevisan is the first to have won its qualification by taking the best of Belarus competing under a neutral banner Aliaksandra Sasnovich (47th) Sunday, 7-6 (12/10), 7-5.

“Paris is a bit like my second home, the atmosphere there is magical, I feel really good on the court”, she rejoiced on the court just after her victory, a huge smile on her lips.

She wore that same smile just before playing her match point. “Smiling helps me in times of tension. It’s not always easy but it relaxes me,” she explained.

After her victory last weekend in Rabat, the Italian is on her ninth victory in a row.

Fernandez needed three sets to overcome Amanda Anisimova (28th), who reached the Porte d’Auteuil semis in 2019 when she was only 17, 6-3, 4-6 , 6-3.

“It was a very complicated match, I knew she would make a lot of winning points and that I would have to stay positive to find solutions. I’m really very happy to have been able to beat her… and to have been able to play in front of Thierry Henry », rejoiced the young Canadian just after the victory, visibly delighted with the presence in the stands of the Central of the former French footballer and ex-coach of CF Montreal.

Fernandez, former Porte d’Auteuil winner in juniors (2019), had already shown great tenacity in the previous round to beat the Olympic champion and 14th in the world, Belinda Bencic, coming back from 2 games to zero in the 3rd set to finally win after 2h49 of play.

She is the 4th Canadian player to reach the quarter-finals at Roland-Garros, the latest being Eugénie Bouchard in 2014.
