League Cup: Cincinnati easily beats a Mexican club

FC Cincinnati got some momentum for their playoff run by beating Chivas de Guadalajara 3-1 in a League Cup exhibition game on Wednesday night at TQL Stadium.

This tournament is jointly organized by Major League Soccer (MLS) and Liga MX, the two major leagues in North America. It will grant places in the CONCACAF Champions League next year to the winners and runners-up of the competition.

With the schedule tight due to the Soccer World Cup, the League Cup in 2022 will only consist of five exhibition games between American and Mexican clubs. Two of these meetings took place on August 3.

In Cincinnati, it was the visitors who opened the scoring in the 20th minute of play. Midfielder Pavel Perez beat Alec Kann with a long shot.

The action was suspended for an hour due to weather conditions. The half was thus reduced, which seemed to affect the Chivas players. Yuya Kubo, Calvin Harris and Brandon Vazquez struck back-to-back between the 53rd and 77th minute to give the home side a definitive advantage.

In MLS, FC Cincinnati still has three games to play and is sixth in the Eastern Conference. Chris Albright’s squad are trying to make the playoffs for the first time in their history, in their fourth season on the Garber Tour.

The other matches of the evening in the League Cup were to oppose Nashville SC to Club America and Real Salt Lake to Atlas FC.
