Lamborghini Countach LP500: the 1971 prototype rebuilt

Initially scheduled for the end of May 2021, the Concours d’Elégance at the Villa d’Este had been postponed, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, to this weekend (from October 1 to 3). On this occasion, in Italy on the shores of Lake Como, Lamborghini will unveil the reconstruction of the very first Lamborghini Countach, namely the prototype presented at the Geneva Motor Show in 1971.

This is what can be called an “automotive renaissance”. Presented in Switzerland 50 years ago, the prototype, or concept car, Lamborghini Countach LP500 was then used for impact resistance tests before being scrapped. Today, on behalf of a collector, the Sant’Agata Bolognese firm unveils a superb reconstruction identical to the original model. This “new” Lamborghini Countach LP500 will therefore participate in the Concours d’Elegance of the Villa d’Este in the category dedicated to concept cars.

In Italy, the new Lamborghini Countach LPI 800-4 (pictured above) which will be marketed in 112 units will also be present alongside the LP500 concept car.

No less than 25,000 hours of work were required to create this Lamborghini Countach LP500 faithful to the 1971 model (pictured below). The Lamborghini Centro Stile teams have, of course, worked to make this replica as perfect as possible. So even the Pirelli Cinturato CN12 tires of the time were remanufactured.

Regarding the engine of this incredible Lamborghini Countach LP500, the press release from the Italian manufacturer does not reveal any information about it. Recall that the 1971 Countach LP500 was equipped with a 5.0 l V12 then, the series Countach were powered by a smaller 4.0 l V12 with a power of 375 horsepower.

Before showing you, in video, this Lamborghini Countach LP500 rebuilt in the rules of the art, let Stephan Winkelmann, the CEO of Automobili Lamborghini, show us the rebuilt Lamborghini Countach LP500:

“The Countach reinvented high-performance cars and became an icon in terms of stylistic language which, even today, after decades, still inspires contemporary Lamborghinis. Bringing the reconstruction of the first Countach to the concept car class of the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, the year we celebrate the 50th anniversary of this model, is something extraordinary, because it allows us to admire the legendary 1971 LP 500 again for the first time in so many years. «
