LAFC’s Diego Rossi targeted by Turkish club Fenerbahce

Turkish club Fenerbahce are in talks with Major League Soccer LAFC to acquire striker Diego Rossi, sources have confirmed to ESPN.

Turkish exit Un Spor was among those who signaled Fenerbahce’s interest in Rossi.

Rumor has it that Rossi, 23, is being sold by LAFC, but the coronavirus pandemic has put a damper on the global transfer market. Fenerbahce is looking for an attacker, but must act quickly. While the transfer deadline to Turkey is September 9, the deadline to name his Europa League roster is Thursday.

Operating primarily on the wing, Rossi has been an impressive performer for LAFC since joining ahead of the 2018 season, scoring 57 goals in 120 league, playoff and cup appearances. In the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign, Rossi won the Golden Boot with 14 goals, was named in the MLS Best XI and won the league’s Young Player of the Year award.

Coming from Uruguayan team Peñarol, Rossi has represented Uruguay at many youth levels, but has yet to make an appearance with the senior team.

If the deal goes through, Rossi would end up at the same club as Mesut Ozil, Enner Valencia and Luiz Gustavo. They have won their three games to start the 2021-22 league campaign so far, and only follow Trabzonspor on goal differential.
