Lack of F1 in 2023, Drugovich wanted to re-enlist in Formula 2

Fresh 2022 Formula 2 champion but without a starting wheel in F1 for next year, Felipe Drugovich would have liked to run in the antechamber of the Grands Prix in 2023.

The Brazilian is calling on F2 organizers to change the rule which prohibits the defending champion from returning for another season in the championship.

Three of the last four Formula 2 winners, namely Nyck de Vries, Oscar Piastri and now Felipe Drugovich, had to spend a year on the bench after being crowned, which is not the best option for them.

“I think in my opinion, either you are champion and you can no longer stay in F2 on the sole condition of being promoted to F1, or you can come back”said Drugovich, quoted by the Anglo-Saxon press.

“That’s how it works in Moto2 and Moto3. I think first of all, what needs to change is that whoever wins the championship should be automatically established in F1.

Drugovich will take on the role of development driver for Aston Martin in 2023 and should already take part in a few free practice sessions by the end of the season. But it is not excluded that he completes his schedule with a program in another championship.

« We’ve had some contacts in IndyCar but that’s not the main focus at the moment, we’re just trying to be in F1, » did he declare.

« But like I said, if I need to race somewhere else next year, that’s definitely a category to consider. »he says.
