Paris Saint-Germain’s Kylian Mbappe won his third straight UNFP Ligue 1 Player of the Year award on Sunday and hinted he is close to announcing a decision over his future amid Real Madrid rumours. The 23-year-old France international was the winner in 2019 and 2021, while the 2020 award was canceled due to the premature end of the season by COVID-19. Mbappe is currently leaving everyone wondering if this is his last season in his homeland or if he will join his national team mate Karim Benzema at the Santiago Bernabeu.
« We’ll find out soon, » said PSG number 7 when asked about his future. “It’s almost over. My choice is pretty much made. To win this for the third time is incredible and I thank my team-mates, the club, the coach and everyone behind the scenes who helped us win back the title. »
Mbappé is not yet PSG’s all-time top scorer and will need at least another season to overtake Edinson Cavani with 200 goals. The former AS Monaco player was asked about this mark as a goal after scoring 36 goals this season.
« You have to respect what he managed to do, » he said. “Scoring 200 goals for PSG is incredible. Just being part of this circle is an honor and you should savor what you have achieved. I am already very happy to be in the top 3”.
Elsewhere, Mbappe’s PSG team-mate Gianluigi Donnarumma was voted Goalkeeper of the Year despite a difficult first season in France, while Olympique de Marseille’s William Saliba was voted Young Player of the Year and Bruno Stade Rennes’ Genesio received the prize for best coach.
Mbappe, Donnarumma and Nuno Mendes, who was in contention for the young player title, will now join their PSG teammates who are already in Qatar for a mini-tour before the end of the current season.
The Frenchman’s decision is expected before he joins the Blues for international matches this summer, after Mbappe himself set the deadline with his comments after receiving his latest award.
