Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has hinted that the Spanish club could strike a deal to sign Kylian Mbappe on January 1.
Mbappe’s contract with Paris Saint-Germain expires at the end of the season – and Madrid tried to sign him before the current campaign started, but their offers were turned down.
The striker’s contractual situation allows him to negotiate with other teams from January 1, 2022.
Perez told a Spanish newspaper Debate: “In January, we will have news on Mbappé.
“I hope everything can be sorted out on January 1. «
However, Marca report that Perez subsequently backed down slightly, saying, “My words were misinterpreted.
“What I said is that we have to wait until next year to hear from him, always regarding PSG with whom we have good relations. «
Perez’s first comments prompted an angry reaction from PSG sporting director Leonardo.
« This has been going on for two years, » the Brazilian told French sports daily L’Equipe. “I just remember that the transfer window is closed, that a season is underway.
“There are matches and Real Madrid cannot continue to behave like this. « Let it stop! Kylian is a Paris St Germain player and the club want this relationship to last. «
Mbappe himself has not completely ruled out staying at PSG beyond this season.
When asked if he was going to leave next summer, Mbappe said The Team: “I’ve been in football long enough now to know that the truth of yesterday is not necessarily the truth of today, nor of tomorrow.
« If I were told that [Lionel] Messi was going to play for PSG, I wouldn’t have believed him, so you never know what’s going to happen. «
« My bet is that Mbappe will arrive next summer »
Kylian Mbappe is more likely to move to Real Madrid next summer than in January, and a move for Erling Haaland also cannot be ruled out – according to Spanish football expert Alvaro Montero.
« I would say that in January it’s almost impossible [to sign Mbappe] Said Montero Sky Sports News.
“I think Real Madrid want to sign the player for free which means maybe in January they will have a deal.
“My bet is that he will arrive next summer, a lot of people in Spain think Real Madrid will win the war. I think it will be a huge reboot, it will be the most important player they have signed since Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009.
“The new Bernabeu stadium will not be the sporting project, but Kylian Mbappe will be the sporting project. He will be the leader for sure.
“He thought so himself last summer. He will be a great sports leader for the next decade. «
Haaland, meanwhile, is a long-term target for Real and Montero believes the club see both Mbappe and Borussia Dortmund as key parts of a new rebuild.
“Erling Haaland could be the target for next season, but it’s too early to talk about it,” Montero added.
“Within the club, they believe they are the future. It’s going to happen next summer and they want to do a huge, big renovation with these important players. «
