Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert recently became the third NFL player to have his card sold for at least $1 million.
As clarified by the ESPN network, two cards illustrating the third-year pivot have actually sold at high prices lately. One, from the 2020 Panini National Treasures Platinum NFL Shield Series, was acquired Saturday night for $1.8 million. The autographed piece changed hands through auctioneer Goldin.
A few days earlier, another rookie card starring Herbert – from the 2020 Panini Prizm Black Finite series – was traded by Boston Sports Cards to a trio of buyers who paid $1.1 million.
The only other athletes in the league with a card paid in the low seven figures are quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs and Tom Brady of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. A 2017 card showing Mahomes sold for $4.3 million in July 2021, the highest sum to date.
