Joel Embiid: « I couldn’t walk anymore »
After two first average matches, Joel Embiid took over his snowshoe demolition business. Last night, against the Spurs, he had 40 points, 13 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 blocks. An insufficient performance to deliver a first win for the Sixers, and unsurprisingly he had to respond to Doc Rivers’ claims. The day before, his coach had revealed that his player was suffering from foot pain.
« It started when the team was in LA, and it just happened out of nowhere, » explained Joel Embiid, his son on his knees. “I thought it was, I don’t know what… Body aches. But as the players went on, it got worse and worse. To a point where I couldn’t walk and it was really painful. But I’m fine. No need to find excuses. We just have to play better. We start slowly, but do not worry about it. It’s a new team. You have to find a way to win. »
It will take several more weeks
Embiid also confirms that he was unable to train normally… « I’m trying to get back to where I was before. When I arrived at the training camp, I hadn’t done anything for about two months, and that really held me back. I’m still trying to get my form back and I hope everything will be back to normal. »
In the meantime, Doc Rivers will continue to spare him, with longer rest periods. « It’s obviously not what we were planning to do at the start of the season, » admits the Philadelphia coach. “But we feel that for Joel, given his physical condition and not having trained before training camp, this is the best option to get him playing right now. And it will probably last a few more weeks until we feel we can get him back to better shape. »
