In 1896, Henry Ford built the Ford quadricycle with its water-cooled 4 horsepower engine. To market his invention, he created the « Detroit automobile company » in 1899, which was liquidated in 1901. A new company appeared the same year, « the Henry Ford company ». Finally, in 1903, it was the « Ford motor company ». Ford’s first logo consisted of an oval in which was inserted the inscription « Ford Motor Co », as well as « Detroit, Mich ». Around, arabesques adorn the center of the logo, an art nouveau design, very trendy at the beginning of the 20th century.

As early as 1907, an American football ball

From 1907 to 1909, the Ford letters in capital letters are framed by an oval widened at the top and bottom, a sort of American football where it is noted that the cars were guaranteed for 12 months. The change consists, this same year, in using only the surname in cursive writing, the « D » ending as a signature. In 1911 and 1912, the name of Ford is for the first time inserted in a real oval surrounded by the mention « The famous motor car ». Logical because the Ford T was the only model of the brand and it had become emblematic.

Breakup in 1912

That year, a team of designers created a kind of blue winged triangle resembling a phoenix framing the name of Ford and underlined by a slogan: « The universal car »; the universal car. The logo will last until 1917 before returning to the oval. From 1917 to 1957, the Ford name (a capital F and a rather enlarged D) was inserted into a logo attributed to the Ford England team which would become the official logo in the 1920s. In 1957, the logo took the form of an American football ball, and this until 1961.

A slightly flattened oval

Since 1961, the designers have kept the same logo; a fairly flat oval whose color will evolve into several shades of blue. The lettering of the Ford name is part of this design which will sometimes take on metallic reflections intended to provide relief, in particular from 1976 to 2003. The logo will finally be simplified; the Ford name on a blue background is surrounded by a white line surrounded again by a blue line.
