Italy: The national team doctor puts an end to Spinazzola’s season

Andrea Ferretti finds it hard to imagine Leonardo Spinazzola returning to AS Roma’s squad this season. The Italy national football team doctor is rather pessimistic about the Italian international’s recovery from injury six months ago at Euro 2020.

Italian full-back Spinazzola exploded onto the European scene last summer at Euro 2020, beating an Azzurri star in 3 fully played games during the Italian team’s first matches in the competition. The 19-year-old Roman then suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon in the quarter-final match against Belgium and hasn’t played a single minute of football since.

Speaking on the radio show on Il Diabolico e Il Divino, Doctor Ferretti spoke about Spinazzola’s injury and believed that the player will be fit enough to play again. « I saw Spinazzola again just before Christmas and he was very optimistic, even though he knew he wouldn’t be coming back anytime soon. But field testing has yet to begin. I think his realistic return is at the start of next season, with the prospect of being fully fit for the World Cup.
