Maria Sole Ferrieri Caputi made history in Italy on Wednesday, December 15, 2021, becoming the first female referee to officiate a match involving a Serie A club.
Maria Sole Ferrieri Caputi held the whistle when Cagliari played against Cittadella in Coppa Italia last Wednesday. She was in charge of the round of 16 match of the national tournament at the Sardegna Arena. There were two female referees for the Serie B matches, Maria Marotta and Ferrieri Caputi, but this match was different as it involved a Serie A team, especially Cagliari.
Maria Sole Ferrieri Caputi is the fourth female referee registered in Italian football at professional level. At 31, she is a researcher at Fondazione Adapt and comes from Livorno. Maria Sole Ferrieri Caputi’s first Serie B match took place between Cittadella and SPAL in October 2021. She has just taken another step towards the « dream » expressed by the former president of the AIA (Italian Association of Referees ), Alfredo Trentalange, to have a female referee for a Serie A match.
