Italy - Covid-19: Compulsory vaccine for athletes from January 2022

The Covid-19 vaccine will soon be mandatory in Italy for all athletes including Italian Serie A players under new rules imposed by the country’s government. Provisions that will come into force from January 10, 2022.

From January 10, professional athletes in Italy will not be exempt from the new government rules on Covid-19 vaccines. Due to the new Omicron variant, restrictions will be tightened and a Super Green Pass is announced.

This means that only the vaccination status will be accepted when entering stadiums, gymnasiums, swimming pools, locker rooms or any other closed sports structure. These arrangements should not pose a problem in Italy especially in elite football, given that the Lega Serie A announced last October that 98% of its players are vaccinated.
