It was the funny image of the third race of the season in Long Beach. On the 55th lap of the race, after a collision with Takuma Sato, Simon Pagenaud found himself in the flowerbed of the prestigious Long Beach fountain. Symbol of a race that did not go in the right direction for the Frenchman, on a circuit that he nevertheless particularly appreciates since he won there in 2016, the year of his title.
» It was not the best race for us, confirmed the Habs after the race. Despite a very good pace all weekend, we didn’t get the result we wanted. The strategy was great, but as you’ve seen, the accident with Sato wasn’t ideal – but it did get us a great TV appearance! I don’t think I would do anything different if I had to do it again. Apart from that, we had a very good rhythm all weekend, so I remain confident for the rest of the season. »
Starting four laps behind the leader, the winner of the 24 Hours of Daytona in January finished 19th and last classified. Simon Pagenaud currently sits in 12th place in the championship with 50 points, just ahead of his teammate at Meyer Shank Racing, Helio Castroneves. The next Grand Prix of the 2022 season will take place at the Barber Circuit in Alabama on May 1.
