Milan (AFP) – Inter Milan of Simone Inzaghi, defending champion and leader of Serie A, can consolidate its domination over Italian football a little more with the Italian Supercup where it advances as a favorite on Wednesday (9 p.m.) against a Juventus irregular and diminished.
In San Siro, Inzaghi can win his first title on the nerazzurro bench, in a competition where he has 100% success: he won the two Supercups played with Lazio (2017 and 2019), both times against Juve.
« In the finals, there are no favorites. We know that they are used to the finals, but we want to offer this trophy to our tifosi », he stressed Tuesday at a press conference, before this gala match which will be played in front of a stadium limited to 50% of its capacity, before the entry into force of a more restrictive ceiling (5,000 maximum) from January 15.
The Nerazzurri started 2022 with an eighth win in a row in the league on Sunday against Lazio (2-1), the only team that had managed to beat them in the league in the first leg.
In full confidence, with the best attack in Serie A and the second best defense, they currently seem untouchable in Italy, combining a solidity inherited from Antonio Conte and the attacking game advocated by ex-striker Inzaghi.
Life without Chiesa
But beware of the reaction of pride of Juventus, a team on alternating current, without identity in the game and out of scorers but which has not lost any of its mental resources: this character allowed him in particular to win the first place in his group in the Champions League (ahead of Chelsea) but also to snatch a draw at the very end of the match at San Siro against Inter (1-1), in October in the league.
To hope to keep the Supercup, won last season against Naples (2-0), it will therefore be necessary « Juventus of the last twenty minutes » against Roma on Sunday, underlines Mattia De Sciglio, who should again be the holder in a Turin defense decimated (Danilo injured, Bonucci in recovery, De Ligt and Cuadrado suspended).
Massimiliano Allegri, the coach who has played the most Super Cups (it’s his seventh Wednesday, overtaking Marcello Lippi’s six), must also recompose his attack, in the absence of Federico Chiesa, whose season has ended Sunday with a ruptured ligament in the left knee.
« It’s a blow to all Italian football, and Juventus first. We hope to be able to dedicate the victory to him tomorrow, » said captain Giorgi Chiellini on Tuesday.
An injury regretted by the Turinese tifosi as by all Italian football: « Good luck Federico, we are expecting you soon on the field for other major duels », wrote Inter Milan to him on Twitter on Monday.
