In Spain, football rights are worth nearly a billion euros per year

BRIEF // In Spain, the rights to the national football championship have just been sold for nearly a billion euros per year over 5 years. Rights won in particular by Dazn, which continues to assert itself as a major player in European sport.

No football fan in France has forgotten the Mediapro fiasco, when the Professional Football League (LFP) believed it could sell the rights to Ligue 1 for 1.1 billion euros per season to a Spanish actor who made no guarantees. On the other side of the Pyrenees, however, we have just shown that such sums are apparently attainable. La Liga, the Spanish league, has sold its broadcasting rights to Movistar and Dazn for 4.96 billion euros over five seasons, or 990 million per year. Actors already well established who should, them, support such sums, especially as the round ball arouses much more excitement in the Iberian Peninsula. In addition to the snub to the madness of the grandeur of French football, we will also remember the breakthrough (one more) of Dazn, who continues to assert himself as a staple of European sport. The British « Netflix of sport » has already developed well in Great Britain, Germany and Italy, and even appeared, in vain, on French football during the call for tenders in early 2021.
