Ice hockey – NHL: Tampa Bay, Edmonton and Carolina in the second round

It’s a crazy weekend in the NHL, with no less than five Game 7s of the first round of the play-offs on the menu. Florida, Colorado and St. Louis managed to qualify for the Conference semifinals fairly quickly, but for the others, it’s more complicated. Starting with the two-time defending champion, Tampa Bay, who had to struggle to win their ticket to the next round, winning 2-1 in Toronto in the last game. The Maple Leafs, better ranked in the regular season (3rd against 5th), fell on a great Nick Paul, author of a double (19th and 57th minute), while only Morgan Rielly, in the 34th, had found the opening for the canadian franchise. Toronto therefore stops in the first round for the second year in a row, while the Lightning, with its Frenchman Pierre-Edouard Bellemare (14 minutes of play this Saturday, a shot on goal), continues its journey and will face the first of the regular season, Florida.

Carolina suffered until the end, Edmonton did not shake too much

Still in the East, Carolina, 2nd, managed to conclude its series against Boston, 6th, by winning the last match with the score of 3-2. The Hurricanes led 2-0 early in the second period through Teuvo Teravainen and Max Domi, but the Bruins responded through Jake DeBrusk, before Domi restored Carolina’s two-goal lead at the half-hour mark. Boston came back to 2-3 through David Pastrnak, but with just 22 seconds left to play, Carolina held on. The Hurricanes will play their second round against the NY Rangers or Pittsburgh, while Boston is eliminated in the first round for the first time since 2017. Finally, in the Western Conference, Edmonton also qualified for the second round, making respect the hierarchy against Los Angeles. Fifth in the regular season, the Oilers won Game 7 2-0 against the Kings, sixth, thanks to goals from Cody Ceci (34th) and Connor McDavid (57th), the best scorer in these play-offs (4 goals , 10 pass). Here is the Canadian franchise in the second round for the first time in five years (against Calgary or Dallas). A second round that Los Angeles has not known since its coronation in 2014.
