The new NHL franchise that will debut in the 2020-21 season on the Seattle side will be called “Kraken” and will have blue as its main color.

After the arrival of the Las Vegas Golden Knights in 2017, the NHL will welcome a second new franchise in the 21st century. We knew since 2018 that this new team would be based in Seattle, and we know since Thursday its name, colors and logo. Welcome to the Seattle Kraken, which will evolve in blue and whose logo will be an S (like Seattle)! The Kraken is a fantastic creature of medieval Scandinavian legends, with many tentacles, and is found in many video games, but also in films and novels. The logo has a tentacle and suction cups, but also a red eye, which will be enough to scare future opponents of Seattle.  » Seattle is a city with a great maritime history. I think this name embodies the connection we have with the sea and the curiosity we all have to know what is there. It’s a natural connection to Seattle. The logo reflects the power and aggressiveness found in hockey. We hope this is the kind of attitude our players will adopt every time they find themselves on the ice, ”said franchise general manager Ron Francis, who said nearly 1,200 name suggestions had been filed.

An expansion draft in a few months

The Seattle Kraken will play at the Climate Pledge Arena, which hosted the SuperSonics in the NBA until their departure in 2008, but the hall will be renovated and will be able to accommodate 17,400 spectators. The franchise will play in the Pacific Division, forcing the Arizona Coyotes to join the Central Division. As with Las Vegas in 2017, an expansion draft will take place to supply players to Seattle. Thus, the Kraken will choose a player among the 30 other NHL teams (not Las Vegas), knowing that the franchises will be able to protect between 9 and 11 players of their workforce so as not to send them to Seattle. Players in their first or second year of NHL as well as free players will not be eligible to be recruited by the Kraken. But while waiting for the 2020-21 season, we must first complete the 2019-20 fiscal year. The season, interrupted since mid-March, will resume on August 1.
