The NHL Championship game between the New York Rangers and the Washington Capitals (2-4) degenerated and turned into a settling of scores on the night of Wednesday to Thursday at Madison Square Garden.

The referees awarded 100 penalty minutes in the first twenty minutes. The start of the duel was punctuated by six fights, including three from the first engagement.

More than a century old, the NHL had never recorded six fights during the first five minutes of a game, which caused congestion on the benches of the banished.

The slippage finds its source in the framework of the last duel between the two teams. 48 hours earlier, in the same rink, Ontario Washington winger Tom Wilson had struck Russian strikers Pavel Buchnevich and Artemi Panarin in the head and got away with a fine of $ 5,000. A sanction qualified as « ridiculous«  by many analysts.

Wilson’s non-suspension was deemed intolerable by Rangers owner James Dolan, who cracked a rare statement: he claimed the head of Discipline Prefect Georges Parros.
