The Oklahoma City Thunder franchise announced on Thursday that Chet Holmgren, whom it drafted second in the last draft, will not play this season due to a right foot injury.

There has been Joel Embiid, Ben Simmons or Blake Griffin in recent seasons, there will be Chet Holmgren in 2022-23. Like his prestigious elders, he was drafted in a very high position, but he will not play during his rookie season. The 20-year-old strong winger (or pivot), chosen as No. 2 by Oklahoma City behind Paolo Banchero (chosen by Orlando) injured his right foot during a match between professionals and amateurs this Saturday in Seattle. There were many fears since this match and the diagnosis came in: lesion of the Lisfranc, that is to say the joint in the middle of the foot which connects several bones, and therefore a white season. “Of course, we’re disappointed for Chet, especially given how excited he was to be on the court with his teammates this season,” wrote Sam Presti, the Thunder’s executive vice president and general manager. We know Chet has a long career ahead of him with this franchise and the Oklahoma City community. One of the things that impressed us the most during the selection process was his determination and focus. We expect the same tenacity to carry him through this period. We will work together and support him as he recovers. »

But it will therefore be necessary to wait until October 2023 to see it on an NBA floor. The Thunder, who relied heavily on his prodigy after two difficult seasons (penultimate in the Western Conference in 2021 and 2022), could still live a season without play-offs …
