Hockey – NHL – Controversy around a player convicted of a sexual crime but selected by the Montreal Canadiens


The Montreal Canadiens picked a player convicted of a sex crime in the NHL draft. This is causing an uproar in Canada. Even Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was outraged. The Montreal Canadiens, recent Stanley Cup finalists, are at the heart of a controversy in Canada after the NHL draft. They have indeed selected the defender Logan Mailloux (18 years old). However, he was convicted of a sexual crime. During a sexual relationship, he had taken a photo of his partner without the latter’s knowledge and had disseminated it to his teammates. Mailloux himself had asked not to be selected in the NHL this year, in order to work a year towards his redemption. What the majority of teams in the North American Pro League have accepted. But not Canadians. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, a great supporter of the Montreal franchise, himself commented on the decision of his heart team.
