On the eve of the IndyCar championship final, American hopeful Colton Herta is holding back from rumors about his future in Formula 1.
This weekend at Laguna Seca brings the 2022 IndyCar campaign to a close and Herta is currently in eighth place with a 1-point lead over his Andretti Autosport teammate Alex Rossi (the last American driver to race in Formula 1 for Manor in 2015) and 2 points over Felix Rosenqvist (McLaren).
In any case, he will not be able to score enough points to reach the total of 40 required to win the sacrosanct super license in order to race in Formula 1 next season as it is in question.
It would therefore be necessary for the FIA to grant a derogation to Herta, which is possible in the texts if not in the spirit of the regulations.
Red Bull is lobbying intensely in this direction with the aim of hiring the young American (22) at Scuderia AlphaTauri in 2023 in place of Pierre Gasly, potential successor to Fernando Alonso at Alpine.
Herta completed two days of testing for McLaren in July at the Portimao circuit and he impressed the team with his physical and mental preparation, which sparked interest from other teams.
“I understand the arguments of both sides when it comes to the super license, concedes Colton, but assigning fewer points to IndyCar than to Formula 2 seems to me to be unfair from a sporting point of view. »
“Regarding the interest expressed by AlphaTauri, I let my father lead these negotiations to concentrate on the end of the season in IndyCar, he assures. Then we will see if there is an opportunity. »

Everything will depend on the good will of the sporting authorities to award him the super license, otherwise Herta will see the end of his contract with Andretti in IndyCar next year before pursuing his ambition to become a Grand Prix driver.
It is rumored, however, that Michael Andretti would have views on the Scuderia AlphaTauri within which Herta would be placed like a « Trojan horse » before its takeover by Andretti Global, the new F1 team in the making across the Atlantic.
