Four spectators were injured on Friday in Afghanistan’s capital Kabul when a grenade exploded at a stadium where a cricket match was taking place, police and officials said.

« A hand grenade exploded during the Shpageeza Cricket League » at the Kabul International Stadium, Kabul police spokesman Khalid Zadran told reporters.

Four spectators were injured in the explosion, said Naseeb Khan, head of the Afghan cricket federation, a very popular game in Afghanistan.

In a press release published at the end of the day, the UN humanitarian coordinator for Afghanistan, Ramiz Alakbarov, present at the stadium during the explosion, denounced an “atrocious attack”.

It is « another painful reminder of the terrifying and sudden violence to which the Afghan population continues to be exposed », he added, quoted in the press release.

After the explosion, the game was interrupted for a few minutes, before resuming, according to the police spokesman.

Several hundred people attended this match of a tournament which took place again for the first time since the coming to power of the Taliban last August.
