Formula 1 | Williams F1: Russell wants to ‘resist the idea of going over the limit’

The Williams F1 drivers did not show a very encouraging level of performance in Qatar for Friday’s free practice. But like the drivers’ trend, George Russell had fun on this very fast track.

« I had a great time today » said Russell, who however wants to play it safe. « It’s a very fun circuit to drive and very fast, probably faster than we expected. »

“The tire degradation seems relatively low, which allowed us to push quite hard, which we all want as drivers on a track. I’m not sure what that will mean for Sunday’s race, as it doesn’t was not easy to overtake. «

« However, conditions look set to change tomorrow which should be better. But even if they don’t we will adapt to the situation. The vibrators are also quite aggressive given the speeds we are reaching. »

« So you’re going to have to compromise and resist the idea of going over the limit, because not only is it slower, but it could damage the car as well. But overall it was a fun day. »

Latifi was more comfortable than his lap times showed

Nicholas Latifi had the good surprise to discover such a fun track as on his team’s simulator: « I expected the Losail International Circuit to be fun after driving it on the simulator and it didn’t disappoint! »

« It’s really quick and smooth, with few sharp corners, which is perfect for today’s Formula 1 cars and I think it suits the characteristics of our car well. »

« I felt we were comfortable on the track, but that didn’t translate to the lap times, so we’re going to look at the data we’ve gathered tonight and find the areas where we can progress for tomorrow. «

« A brand new circuit creates a lot of complexity for qualifying, but each team will be in the same position so we will do our best to meet these challenges. »

Dave Robson, the team’s chief track engineer, expects a tough day to tackle tomorrow: « Tomorrow’s EL3 session will be hot and probably not very representative of qualifying conditions. »

“We will use the session to finalize some elements of the car specification, but the key points will be based on today’s experience. There will still be some uncertainty ahead of qualifying and the race, we will have to we adapt to the situation and make the most of the conditions. «
