Formula 1 | Williams F1: Is Capito impressed enough to sign De Vries?

Williams F1: Is Capito enough (...)

Despite his very impressive Formula 1 debut at Monza, that does not guarantee Nyck de Vries a starting seat for 2023.

The Mercedes F1 reserve driver, who replaced Alex Albon at Williams, beat Nicholas Latifi from the start and scored two points for his first Grand Prix.

So, Jost Capito, the CEO, is he ready to sign it? We now know that he was ready to accept in April to have Oscar Piastri in place of the Canadian.

« You are going a little fast in conclusions. Yes, he was impressive, of course, you can put it that way. I already knew he would be able to. »

« The seat depends on a number of factors, but Nyck has certainly shown the whole paddock what he can do. »

« I’ve known Nyck for a while and we’re friends. He’s still on the list, but he has other obligations as well, so it’s up to him. He needs to see what his future holds and from there we move forward. »

Some rumors in the paddock, however, indicate that Williams has already committed to signing Mick Schumacher, as part of a pre-contract. Can it be broken? Will it be confirmed?

For now, the best de Vries can do is travel to Singapore in three weeks in case Albon has to prolong his recovery.

« Alex has been under general anesthesia and each person reacts differently to that, » Capito continues.

« I understand from the doctors that there is a good chance he will be fit for Singapore, but Nyck will at least be there as a reserve driver. »
