Williams F1 again scored points at Monza, thanks to ninth place George Russell. The Briton took advantage of a solid pace and favorable circumstances to add two points to the team’s total. Enough to satisfy the structure of Grove, which continues the rebound that began in Hungary.
« This weekend was not the most competitive in terms of pace, but we had a decent car that both drivers were able to use to attack the cars ahead. » notes Dave Robson, performance director.
« We gained a few places thanks to the bad luck of the others, but we also avoided the problems and both drivers performed very well on a difficult and demanding circuit. »
He also praised the performance of Nicholas Latifi, whose level of performance was very close to Russell this weekend, and who finished close to the points: « Nicholas was outstanding in the first stint and was well positioned after the save. »
“However, the timing of the safety car was unfortunate for him and, conversely, perfect for George who was able to pass Nicholas during the pit stop. From there, George managed a great race, in defending against [Esteban] Ocon and staying close to [Fernando] Alonso. «
« Nicholas was unhappy not to finish in the points, but he drove really well nonetheless, and again it’s a race that will serve him well for the future. »
Now there is a week of rest before going to Sochi for the Russian Grand Prix, in two weeks. Robson also congratulates McLaren on Daniel Ricciardo’s success and the double: « These three races have been grueling for the team, both here and at Grove. »
“The factory tirelessly supplied new and refreshed components, especially following the damage we suffered during qualifying at Zandvoort. However, the collective effort and unwavering good humor ultimately enabled the team to have another good race. «
« Kudos to McLaren who have been quick throughout the weekend and who fully deserve their success. They are a great team and we look forward to renewing our long rivalry with them next year. »
