Formula 1 | Stroll-Pérez battle won by ‘trickery’ for Aston F1

Lance Stroll just entered the top 10 in sprint qualifying this Saturday. The Canadian from Aston Martin F1 could even have started ninth if he had resisted Sergio Pérez’s Red Bull a few more laps, but the Mexican was faster.

There was also a small incident, rare animation of this sprint race, when Checo passed the Aston Martin F1… by cutting the first chicane. An investigation (closed) was opened because Sergio Pérez was suspected of having surrendered his position too late.

Stroll is thus one of the rare drivers who really enjoyed it this Saturday!

“It was a fun race today. It was not an easy decision to go for the soft tires over the medium ones because, although they provide better momentum at the start, degradation becomes a factor later. We got off to a good start and gained a few places in what was a pretty tricky first chicane with all the smoke from the tires and the grass. I then had a good wheel-to-wheel race with Checo [Perez] later, too. He returned the position to me a little later than expected which caused our DRS train to be lost and allowed [Fernando] Alonso to get closer, but we were able to keep 10th place. We’re going to start tomorrow’s race in the points and I think we can squeeze some more pace out of the car tonight. Overtaking is tricky here so strategy will be important, but I can’t wait to get back into the race tomorrow. «

Sebastian Vettel struggled in the peloton, especially against Fernando Alonso’s Alpine. He almost lost all performance in his tires at the start.

“It was a tricky race for me. I got off to a good start, but had nowhere to go in the car pack and blocked the tires on the first corner. As a result, I had major flats in the left and right front tires which created a lot of vibration. It has become a race to limit the damage. We will start in a position similar to today for tomorrow’s race. As we saw this afternoon, overtaking can be difficult as it is difficult to follow the car in front, but we’ll see what we can do and try to fight for the points. «

Team manager Otmar Szafnauer greets him « Solid piloting » of his first pilot Lance Stroll, “Well placed to score points tomorrow. «  Above all, he criticizes the way in which Sergio Pérez « cleverly » gave his place to Lance Stroll.

« After having cut the chicane by passing Lance, Checo [Perez] was decidedly very cunning while waiting for Lance to lose the Alfa’s suction to[Antonio] Giovinazzi before giving him his place; in doing so, Checo was able to deploy the DRS to iron Lance almost immediately. «

“After a tricky first lap, and a race compromised by his flats on the tires, Sebastian drove well to reach 12th place, and will also aim to score points in tomorrow’s race. «
