Carlos Sainz is still waiting for his first victory in F1, which will also certainly be his first with Ferrari.
The Spaniard didn’t go far from the jackpot in Monaco with the right strategy but Nicholas Latifi delayed him too long on a lap to win ahead of Sergio Perez.
The Spaniard’s frustration was great but he also knows that Monaco is a unique case on the calendar: he still has to progress with his F1-75 to be at the same level of performance as Charles Leclerc. So what is he missing?
« I just need to be a little faster, » he replies to the official F1 website.
« I need one or two tenths, in terms of qualifying and race pace. If I find those one or two tenths, which I found in the second half of last year with the car of the « Last year, the sooner I find them, the sooner victory will come. I’m working hard to find them. »
Sainz stands by his words about the F1-75: it doesn’t suit his fairly fluid driving style as much as it does Leclerc’s more aggressive one.
« You can see on the cameras and everywhere that I’m still not at the top with the car compared to last year, I don’t drive it naturally. The car is a bit too sharp for my taste but it is like that. »
“You can either adapt or bring F1 a bit more to your liking with the settings. Either way, both of these things take time and they require knowledge and experimentation. mistakes…and that’s what I’m doing now. »
Sainz admits « enjoy » to have an F1 capable of winning any Grand Prix weekend.
« I appreciate that, it’s a whole new experience, you have to drive a little bit differently. It’s a different scenario that I’m getting used to. I’m racing against two or three guys who have been in front before. « It’s the first time, my first seven races with a competitive car – and I’ve learned a lot. I’ll apply that for the rest of the season. »
« There are a lot of races left, there is still a lot of time left, so everything is up for grabs. As soon as I make these adaptations and find my feeling with the car, there are good things to come, for sure. «
