Pato O’Ward was impressed after his first F1 test in Abu Dhabi last month. The Mexican drove with McLaren and thinks that what he learned in Formula 1, at the wheel of a hyper-performance single-seater, will also help him in IndyCar from this season.
« There are things I learned in F1 that I can apply to adapt and try new things » O’Ward told Racer. « I think experimenting with different things in IndyCar and building on the weaknesses is something that’s just going to make us all better. »
Raving about Formula 1, O’Ward assures that it hasn’t affected his attraction to IndyCar and his desire for success: « Does driving an F1 car ruin everything? No, because I still have a strong desire to win the IndyCar championship and then win the Indy 500. »
« We were close to that last year so we’ll try again and see what we can do. But in terms of grip and ability it helps a lot. On the same circuit an F1 car is 12 or 13 seconds quicker , it’s a lot. »
O’Ward is happy to have finished third in the championship in 2021 and hopes to improve further: « I think I’ve done better than expected in IndyCar with our current package position, and I think we’re just going to improve, so that’s good. »
« I think I’ve done more than I was asked to do, so that’s all I can do, and wait and see where my future takes me! At the end of the day, I’m really grateful for the opportunity given to me and just hoping for another chance to ride. »
