Esteban Ocon will miss qualifying for the Miami Grand Prix following his accident during final practice on Saturday afternoon.
The Frenchman spun into the barriers at Turn 14 in an incident identical to that of Carlos Sainz in Friday’s second practice session.
Although the impact seemed quite moderate, Alpine F1 discovered a crack in Ocon’s chassis which the team is unable to repair. He will therefore be forced to use a new chassis, which the team is unable to build in time for qualifying.
« It was a big crash, but I’m fine. A cracked chassis means I can’t take part in qualifying today. Absolutely disgusted but I’ll be flat out tomorrow. »
Alpine has confirmed that Ocon will « well physically » and would compete in the Grand Prix on Sunday.
« We can confirm that unfortunately Esteban will not be taking part in qualifying this afternoon. His chassis cracked in the impact with the barrier and cannot be changed in time. Esteban is physically fine and will race tomorrow. »
This will mean Ocon will be forced to start from the pit lane for Sunday’s race, which starts at 9.30pm French time.
