Present in the Spa paddock for the resumption of the 2022 Formula 1 world championship, Esteban Ocon was logically called upon to react to the departure of Fernando Alonso at the end of the season.

The Spaniard surprised the whole field when Aston Martin F1 announced his recruitment for 2023, and the French driver said he was sad to see the Spaniard leave Alpine when everything was going well in the team.

« Honestly, it was a surprise for everyone in the paddock. It’s sad to see Fernando go, we work well together and there’s a very good atmosphere within the team. It’s a bit sad because we were making progress and that’s of course something that we have to continue for the rest of the year. But it won’t be very far. We will race against each other again in 2023, but he is sure to be missed by the team. »

Besides Alonso, Alpine F1 suffered a second shock when Oscar Piastri claimed he would not be driving for the French team next year. But Ocon prefers to focus on the sporting aspect.

« I’m not aware of what’s going on with the contracts. What I do know is that the team is fully focused on performing this weekend, and that’s how it should be. For For my part, I feel rested and 100% prepared for the remaining nine races this year. »

Spa is also the circuit where Ocon made his F1 debut in 2016 with the Manor team. Six years later, young Esteban has grown up well.

« I was much slimmer then, even more than now! I’ve put on a few pounds since, which is a good thing. Of course I’ve changed as a driver, I’m much more experienced than at the time. Of course we always have Anthoine (Hubert) in mind when we come here, we will race for him this weekend. »

If the French driver does not wish to influence his team about the identity of his future teammate, he still admits to having a preference.

« No, I don’t deal with all that. I trust Laurent (Rossi) and Otmar (Szafnauer), I’m sure they receive hundreds of calls for this seat. Personally, I would like let Mick (Schumacher) come by my side because he’s a good friend, but I’m not going to ask my bosses, it’s up to them. »
