By signing a contract extension until 2025 with McLaren F1 just before the start of the season, Lando Norris was probably hoping his team would provide him with a better car this year.
But while the Woking-based team battled Ferrari for third place in the constructors’ championship in 2021, they are moving further from the lead this season and battling with Alpine for the honorary title of « best of the rest, » very far from the top three who play in their own league.
Norris, who signed McLaren’s only podium at Imola (the only top 3 for a team other than Red Bull, Ferrari or Mercedes in 2022), therefore recognizes that the current situation was not the easiest, but that it did not prevent him from enjoying his life within the team, on the contrary.
« I like being here, I always want to be faster, have a faster car, but I knew what I was getting into, » said the 22-year-old Briton.
« I knew it would take time, I didn’t expect us to be on the podium or winning races every weekend.
« We were, and probably still are, behind where we wanted to be this year, but we’re making progress and that’s always good to see. »
« I always want more, I’m demanding, I push the team a lot because we have to improve, keep moving forward because that’s what we have to do if we want to win races. »
« And that’s what I’m doing, but I’m very happy to be here, the team is doing a good job and I’m happy, I’m having a good time. »
