As part of McLaren F1’s TPC (Testing of Previous Car) programme, IndyCar drivers Alex Palou (pictured) and Pato O’Ward were able to rack up more miles in the 2021 MCL35M last week in Austria.
Both men had previously driven in Barcelona a few weeks ago, and their enthusiasm was still high after this new test.
« This is the second circuit we’ve been to in an F1, and it was an amazing new experience, » Palou said. « This track is super suitable for these cars and I had a lot of fun. »
« I’ve had a lot of fun, covered a lot of laps, so it’s been a really cool off-season so far. Hopefully I’ll get the chance to drive this car again, it’s been amazing to be a part of this project. »
O’Ward also discovered the Red Bull Ring at the wheel of an F1 car, having already raced there when he was in F2.
« What a beautiful circuit. It’s a phenomenal facility and it’s fun to drive a Formula 1 there. I’m very happy with the progress made, I feel more and more comfortable in the car. »
« Every time I’m on board, and after each lap, I’m gaining experience that will be useful for the next time. »
With the IndyCar season over, it’s possible Palou and O’Ward will return to driving the MCL35M later in the year.
But the pair could also get their first taste of this season’s MCL36, should McLaren F1 decide to run them in EL1 in the remaining four races.
