Charles Leclerc finished third in the Dutch Grand Prix, behind Max Verstappen’s Red Bull and George Russell’s Mercedes. But the Monegasque does not think he could have taken his Ferrari higher in the standings, between a lack of rhythm and strategic bad luck.
« To be honest, it was difficult to do better » said Leclerc at the microphone of David Coulthard. « We were unhappy with the virtual safety car, but I don’t know if that would have changed much. »
« Max was too fast today. The Mercedes were also too fast on hard tyres, and we struggled to get a good feeling on those tyres, so this race was worth third place for us today. »
Fourth throughout the last part of the race, he saved the podium thanks to a strategic mistake by Mercedes F1 with Lewis Hamilton during the last stint and the intervention of the safety car.
« Lewis was struggling with a set of worn tyres, I had more grip and we managed to overtake. But he held his tires well in the last laps, it wasn’t that easy but we managed to hold on. . »
Asked about his title chances, when he points to 109 units from Verstappen, Leclerc no longer seems to have any illusions: « As I said, the gap is very big. We will take the races one by one and try to maximize our potential. »
