Lewis Hamilton has conceded it will be extremely difficult for Mercedes to win a race before the end of the 2022 season against F1 « almost unbeatable » currently fielded by Red Bull.
Verstappen inflicted a home defeat on Charles Leclerc and Ferrari by claiming his 11th victory in 15 races at the Italian Grand Prix yesterday to move ever closer to his second world title.
The Dutchman is on a five-game winning streak but, remarkably, only one of those has come from pole position. Verstappen won from 10th in Hungary, 14th in Belgium, and his last win at Monza – the 31st of his career – came from 7th on the grid.
Hamilton is suffering his longest F1 winless streak and risks losing his record as the only F1 driver in history to win a race in every season he has participated in.
When asked if he thought a win might be possible at the next race in Singapore, Hamilton admitted it: « It will be better for us than Monza but we have to be realistic. This Red Bull is almost unbeatable. »
« It’s going to take real effort to beat this car. In terms of performance, they are totally ahead of everyone else. »
« We haven’t caught them and we don’t have any evolutions coming up to overtake them, so it’s going to take some luck on our way. »
« It’s not impossible, because we could potentially have beaten them in Zandvoort, maybe in Budapest. »
« But Max is usually very cool once in front or back in front, so you never know the real pace of their F1. »
