Hamilton reveals he refused a role (...)

Tom Cruise and Lewis Hamilton are good friends but the Mercedes F1 driver’s schedule prevented them from teaming up in the latest movie ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, which hit theaters this year.

Lewis Hamilton reveals he had to turn down an offer from Tom Cruise (pictured with his father at Silverstone) to play a fighter driver due to his F1 commitments.

The seven-time world champion was « delighted at the idea of playing a role »having been a huge fan of the original 1986 film « Top Gun. »

« I’m friends with Tom [Cruise]. He’s one of the nicest people you can meet. He invited me to his set years ago when he was doing ‘Edge of Tomorrow,’ and then we just built a friendship over time. »

« When I heard the second ‘Top Gun’ was coming out, I was like, ‘Oh my God, I have to ask him.’ I was like, ‘I don’t care what role it is. I can even sweep something, in a background’. »

But Tom Cruise offered him a much better role: to be one of the fighter pilots in the film, which meant several days or even weeks of filming.

Hamilton then realized that there wouldn’t be enough time to integrate it alongside his preparation for the races.

« I’m a perfectionist. There just wasn’t time. It was the most upsetting call I think I’ve ever had. And I got even more pissed off, very pissed off even, when I got had to call him back to tell him no, that it was not possible. »

Hamilton has, however, found an upcoming film collaboration, with Brad Pitt, for a new Formula 1 film, with Hamilton acting as a co-producer in the project. The film is set to be helmed by ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ director Joseph Kosinski.
