Haas F1 has canceled all contract negotiations with Mick Schumacher and Ferrari for the duration of the August summer break.
Director Günther Steiner had indicated that the break in the F1 calendar was a good time to consider the American team’s driver pair for 2023, with Kevin Magnussen already contracted and confirmed.
But Gene Haas has now asked to suspend talks with Michael Schumacher’s son.
The probable reason is that Haas and Steiner want to see what happens following the imbroglio between Alpine F1 and Oscar Piastri. And with the Aston Martin F1 door closed by the arrival of Fernando Alonso, that also seems to have killed off most Schumacher alternatives, on paper.
Haas can now count on the time factor, knowing full well that the team is currently the only way for the German to secure his place in Formula 1… unless Alpine F1 comes through!
Schumacher’s situation is in any case delicate because according to the latest rumors, his place in the Ferrari driver academy would not be assured for 2023, the Italian press assuring that Mattia Binotto is not « more confident » of the potential of the German.
Without a place at Haas F1, an option for Mick would therefore be to leave the Ferrari sphere to join another manufacturer, such as Alpine, but also Mercedes (Wolff’s support is acquired) or even Red Bull.
