Formula 1 | Getting to F1 is a ‘very serious ambition’ for Colton Herta

While the United States hasn’t had a Formula 1 representative since Alexander Rossi in 2015, the next driver is long overdue. But it could be Colton Herta, one of Indycar’s championship stars who will have the chance to test drive the 2021 McLaren later in the season.

Herta, 22, became the youngest winner in Indycar history in 2019. And he assures it: Formula 1 is a very serious goal.

« I have serious ambitions for F1, » said the American pilot. « When I’m done with racing, I want to be able to say that I’ve accomplished a lot. And Formula 1 is right at the top of the list. I wanted to go to Indycar and the Indianapolis 500, which I always want to win. »

“There are so many races, events and championships I would love to take part in, and F1 is clearly the priority.

Regarding his upcoming test with McLaren, Herta did not wish to reveal the date but knows that he cannot miss that day.

« I could give you the date but if I do I could have problems. It will be later in the year. I can tell you that I will be in Woking in June to mold my seat and do some work in the simulator I can’t wait, the last time I went there was in 2019, for a day in the simulator I think, I hadn’t really been able to see the factory then and I hope I could visit it this time. »

« I know they prefer to keep everything a secret so I hope to see as much as possible. And then we have that test, I’m really looking forward to it it’s going to be fantastic. »

« I want to be in F1 at some point in my career so it will be very important for me to do a very good job during this test which I hope will open doors for me. »

« At the moment I don’t have a seat, no contract, so anything can happen. If nothing materializes with McLaren, I hope at least to get people talking. If I’m quick enough in the car, maybe ‘an opportunity will present itself.
