Ferrari team boss Mattia Binotto admits final phase of 2021 season has become « almost unbearable ».
Indeed, the Italian team worked almost exclusively on their 2022 car throughout the year, while still battling with McLaren for third place in the Constructors’ Championship.
It has been a more than successful relaunch season for Ferrari after its abysmal decline in performance in 2020, but racing a fundamentally undeveloped F1 for that long in 2021 has been difficult for Binotto.
« If I’m being honest it’s almost unbearable, » he said.
« We’ve learned what we want to learn this year and we’ve been working hard on the 2022 car for a long time. I can’t wait for this season to end. »
« We made some improvements to the car at the start of the year, but that was the end of development. And the engine optimization, which we made at the end of the summer, was also aimed at 2022. »
« We saw it as a year of transition from the start and didn’t do anything that could have helped us just for this season. We compromised everything for our work on F1 2022. »
Binotto adds that the obvious performance improvements have been to « work better as a team, not because we were developing the car ».
« If I look at where we were a year ago, then I can say that we made the most of 2021 within a framework of limited possibilities. »
