Alpine F1 has yet to decide if Jack Doohan will be its reserve driver in 2023, but it’s looking good for the Aussie after impressing Otmar Szafnauer.

Signing with the Alpine academy earlier this year, Doohan expects to have a chance as Oscar Piastri has now moved to McLaren. He did not have the starting seat for which he did some forcing behind the scenes but he is at least aiming for the position of reservist.

The Australian is on the right track, with good free practice 1 in Mexico. Other tests are to follow in Abu Dhabi.

« He’s a very quick young man in both F1 and F2, » notes Szafnauer.

“He did 13 laps in our car and during those 13 laps he quickly picked up speed. But we told him beforehand to stay within his limit, not to go full speed.

« He did exactly what we asked him to do after preparing in an exemplary manner. He wanted to know everything. He’s a good guy. »

« For the reserve role, this decision has not yet been taken, » adds the Alpine F1 director.

« I think like my mum always says ‘first the engagement then the wedding. But so far so good. Like I said, he’s an impressive young man. He’s quick. In 2023, his Our goal will be to win the Formula 2 title. If he could do that in his second year, we will focus on him because he will certainly deserve to go further. »

« We are lucky to have him in our youth program. »
