Nyck de Vries says he feared his opportunity to ever make it to Formula 1 had passed, before he was signed by AlphaTauri for 2023.

De Vries was catapulted into the transfer market after the earthquake caused by Fernando Alonso moving to Aston Martin F1 and Oscar Piastri opting to join McLaren. A shaken market which was profitable to him since Daniel Ricciardo no longer seems to interest anyone.

De Vries’ prospects were also helped by a flawless run on his Italian debut, in place of Alexander Albon, when he finished in the top 10 for Williams.

De Vries will be among the oldest starting debutants in recent years, aged 28 at the start of the 2023 season, three years after winning the Formula 2 championship.

“I admit that there were certain periods in my career when I thought it was very unlikely to still have a chance,” he confided in an interview given from the hospitality of AlphaTauri.

« I won F2 and took a different direction in Formula E: it was not a common path to F1. Somehow I always kept one foot in the door and I always took every opportunity that came my way, I started the WEC in F2, even raced in ELMS for G-Drive, participated in different races, I was at Le Mans at the very last minute this year. I love the race. »

“It defines how my path has unfolded, and on top of that I have always been very grateful for my opportunities outside of F1, a lot of racing drivers would be very keen to be in the position that I occupied before moving to F1. »

« It’s easy to get frustrated with what you don’t have, but it’s harder to be grateful for what you actually have. »

« I loved what I was doing, and every opportunity that came up I tried to capitalize on and make the most of it. Monza showed that anything can fall into place and I’m extremely excited about that. grateful. »

De Vries also relativizes the late debut in F1.

« I feel like I’m very young and look very young, which helps! But I’m a bit behind in life in general. I think maturity and experience helps. It’s a bit new, but at the same time I’m very aware that this sport is about performance and competitiveness. »

« I’m enjoying the moment, not yet aware that I’m living my childhood dream. I’m just very grateful and happy and I want to give that back to everyone who has been by my side. »
