Formula 1: Binotto pushes for Giovinazzi at Alfa Romeo in 2022

The boss of Scuderia Ferrari seems to be pushing to support his Italian driver in Formula 1. The Italian clan wants him to keep his seat in the Alfa Romeo team in 2022. But Fred Vasseur remains silent and unstoppable in the face of this.

Formula 1: Ferrari wants to keep Antonio Giovinazzi

The second seat of the Alfa Romeo is the last which has no name for next season. A lot of rumors are circulating and in particular lately, around Antonio Giovinazzi who achieved very good performances during the last two Grand Prix. There is therefore no doubt that the Italian is pushing to keep his seat for the year 2022. But nothing is fixed yet.

It should not be forgotten that Antonio Giovinazzi is above all a driver of the Ferrari Driver Academy and therefore has considerable support from them. And in particular Mattia Binotto who admits not being able to influence the choice of the Ferrari client team:  » I think it’s really a choice of the team. It is also clear that Antonio, for us, is our reserve driver, he is an Italian driver, he is part of the Ferrari family, he is a Ferrari driver ”, Binotto added. “So for us it will be great to have him behind the wheel again next year. We think he’s a good driver and deserves a seat next year. «

Fred Vasseur’s decision?

But once again, don’t be fooled by appearances. The Ferrari team has powered the Swiss team since 2010. And therefore shares with the latter a very good relationship, which has also led to the Alfa Roméo association, since 2017, which is part of the same group as the Scuderia. And as surprising as it may be, the Alfa Romeo team has always counted among its drivers, at least one driver from the Ferrari industry: Charles Leclerc, Kimi Räikkönen or Antonio Giovinazzi.

It therefore seems unlikely or very surprising not to see any of their drivers displayed in the Italo-Swiss clan for next season. Even if the director of Scuderia Ferrari seems to say the opposite and that Fred Vasseur is still very evasive on the decision taken or not:  » We’ve always said we want to take a look at the junior series as well. They are doing two races in a row with Monza and Sochi, and probably by the end of September with the shareholders, we will discuss this point. Zhou is doing a good job in F2. It’s not just because he’s Chinese. He’s a leader in F2, he’s won a few races and I think every F1 team is watching him. With Nyck de Vries, this is certainly not the most comfortable situation. I think Nyck did a good job in the junior series. He won F2 with ART, he won Formula E this season and did a good job when he jumped into F1 in Abu Dhabi. I know him very well because he has driven for ART for a few years in the past, but I think the situation with Mercedes is not easy. […] There are five or six names on the list and we’ll see. «

The mystery therefore remains unresolved and the team still does not seem to have made their decision. Even if according to the words of Fred Vasseur, young people have the first places on the list. And according to rumors running through the Formula 1 paddock, Guanyu Zhou is said to be the favorite to replace Antonio Giovinazzi. Despite everything, the soap opera at the end of the season is still not finished and we will keep you informed of its progress, until the famous decision.
