Formula 1 | Alpine F1 ‘doesn’t understand’ drop in performance at Monza

Alpine F1 'doesn't understand' (...)

Alpine F1 had a disappointing race at Monza, after showing a good pace in free practice. The A522 failed to contend with the McLaren MCL36, surprising sporting director Alan Permane.

« Fernando rode with the medium tire and thought it was fantastic » Permane said. « He was fast, he was doing laps in 1’26 » with a full tank. We really struggled for the pace. »

« We struggled in qualifying, both drivers said they made mistakes, which is uncharacteristic, so clearly the car was difficult to drive. In the race, we had no pace, and we didn’t have the pace we had on Friday afternoon. »

And to confirm that the French team did not have the means to fight against McLaren in the race: « We couldn’t stay with Norris once they were in clean air. If Alonso hadn’t stopped, we predicted he would have finished right behind him. »

Permane is still surprised by the drop in performance of the A522 between Friday and Sunday: « We didn’t expect to have any difficulties. I thought it would be fine, the car was very fast and we drove very well on Friday. That’s the trickiest thing, that’s what we don’t understand. »

« The long stints without DRS, so really using all the resistance, seemed fine and faster than McLaren, faster than anyone we’ve faced. Not as fast as the first three cars, but there didn’t seem to be any major issues. »
