Alpine F1: Alonso would not have (...)

Seventh at the finish of the Grand Prix of Canada, Fernando Alonso finally received a penalty of 5 seconds after the race for having zigzagged in front of Valtteri Bottas on the last lap, and fell back to ninth place.

Starting from the front row, the Alpine F1 driver had a frustrating end to the race after losing a lot of time and positions due to an engine problem and poor timing of the virtual safety car.

He was driving behind his teammate Esteban Ocon to take advantage of the Frenchman’s DRS at the end of the race, but after going a little wide at turn 9, Bottas threatened him at the hairpin at turn 10. He thus changed course several times in the long straight line to stay in front of the Alfa Romeo, a maneuver that the track marshals therefore deemed reprehensible.

It is the second time this season that Alonso has lost points after a race because of a penalty. In Miami, the double world champion lost his ninth place and the two points that go with it following a collision with Pierre Gasly and for having cut off the trajectory.

The Spaniard has in any case received the support of his boss Otmar Szafnauer, who believes that there should not have been a penalty in Montreal: « Was it deserved? No, » he said, before adding that if he was not « not frustrated » by this decision of the commissioners, it was « always better not to receive those penalties and finish higher. »

The Romanian-American leader also regretted the engine problem which disrupted the Spaniard’s race from the 20th lap.

« We don’t know what it is yet, it looks like there was a leak somewhere, but where I don’t know. It manifested itself in rising temperatures and so they had to be managed, so we were limited on the straights. »

At the end of the race, Alonso felt that Alpine F1 should have reversed positions between Esteban Ocon and himself, given that he had been faster all weekend. But Szafnauer explains why it wasn’t done.

« We were sixth and seventh, so what should we do, let them fight or reverse positions again? »

« I’m still in favor of letting them fight, but you have to remember that Fernando suffered from an engine problem, there was a leak which reduced his top speed. Esteban graciously waited for him so he could enjoy from the DRS train, which was the right thing to do to protect him from Bottas. »
