AlphaTauri: It's 'good to (...)

Sixth on the starting grid of the Italian Grand Prix, Pierre Gasly managed to retain eighth place at the finish and score four important points for AlphaTauri. He was, however, cornered by Daniel Ricciardo and could have done better.

Yuki Tsunoda couldn’t come back enough to get back into the top 10, as he started last. But Jody Egginton, the team’s technical director, said the points scored were important.

« It’s good to leave with points, with Pierre who had a solid race » Egginton said. « At the same time, it’s frustrating that with Yuki we couldn’t turn the great performance he showed here into a representative grid position and a better fight for points, because of the penalties. »

« As for Pierre’s run, the fight with the McLarens was good, but with two to one and Ricciardo proving difficult to pass, McLaren’s strategy created some space for Norris, which we couldn’t recover, which meant Pierre finished eighth. »

« In summary, it’s good to score points again, but we need to improve both of our cars in order to improve our manufacturer position, so that’s obviously one of the key areas we need to focus on. «

The race ‘didn’t deserve’ such an end according to Tost

Franz Tost, the team principal, expressed his frustration over the end of the race under the safety car: « The fans and the 100th anniversary celebrations of this historic circuit did not deserve the race to end the way it did. »

« It would have been fantastic to see a struggle in the final laps, but unfortunately as Ricciardo stopped late, in accordance with the regulations, we had to finish the race behind the safety car. »

« As for us, our race was reasonably good. Pierre started from fifth and finished eighth, he struggled a bit with the understeer on the hard tyres, but generally speaking, and also given the performance of the cars in front of us, it was the best possible finishing position. »

« Yuki started from the back of the grid, so it wasn’t easy to overtake the cars, but he managed to do it nonetheless. We called him during the safety car for soft tires, because we thought that he would have a good chance with the new tyres, if the race was restarted. »

« But unfortunately that wasn’t the case. He could only finish 14th, but he had a good weekend. We scored four points, which is positive because we closed the gap to Haas , so now we have to keep this momentum, starting from Singapore in a few weeks and until the end of the season. »
