Alonso: Suzuka is a justice of the peace (...)

Getting back into the points will be Fernando Alonso’s priority objective after two consecutive retirements. For his sixteenth Grand Prix at Suzuka, he will be keen to let his talent do the talking on one of his favorite circuits.

Your Singapore Grand Prix has unfortunately ended prematurely. Looking back, what do you remember?

It was very disappointing to leave Singapore without a single point. We deserved a good result after a very good weekend. I felt confident in the car from the first free practice session and we were able to handle all the mixed conditions well. Due to the hot and humid conditions, it was very stressful and difficult. We qualified well but a mechanical breakdown put an end to our race. Until then, I was very satisfied with my weekend. We lost ground to McLaren in the fight for fourth in the Constructors’ Championship, so now we need to bounce back and get a good result at Suzuka this weekend.

Where are you on the engine side?

We may not be completely secure for the end of the year. So, it’s possible that we may have to introduce a power unit, I don’t think there will be one this weekend but…soon.

Suzuka is one of your favorite circuits. What makes it special?

Suzuka is a justice of the peace for Formula 1 drivers. It is a historic circuit and one of the most pleasant places to drive. We switch from a road course to a more traditional one, but it has several tricky corners and sections. The weather can also be mixed, and you don’t always know what to expect. I also like Japanese culture and the fans can create a very special atmosphere. It’s definitely one of my favorite events of the season.

Do you have a memory that you cherish more than the others?

I have many good memories there. I think one of the best is my pass on Michael Schumacher at the start of the famous 130R corner. It was a nice overtake, especially since it’s not an easy place to do this kind of maneuver because of the high passing speed. We also won the race in 2006, a success that was one of the important steps that led us to the title at the end of the season, in Brazil. This place brings back good memories and the fans are always great.
