Shaqiri scores in MLS before joining the Swiss team
Scorer at the end of the match against Columbus, the Swiss international opened his counter this season with the Chicago Fire. Xherdan Shaqiri will join the Swiss team at the start of the week.
The first goal of the exercise by Xherdan Shaqiri (in white) was not enough, however. Chicago lost at home to Columbus in the MLS Championship.

Xherdan Shaqiri has finally found the net this season in the MLS championship (the North American professional league). A good omen before the two qualifying matches for Euro 2024 with the Swiss team in Andorra on Thursday, then in Lucerne against Romania three days later.
On the night of Saturday to Sunday, the Swiss player from the Chicago Fire slammed his first goal of the exercise with a superb volley from the left inside the penalty area. We were then playing the 88th minute when Xherdan Shaqiri equalized at 1-1 against Columbus. While the Fire seemed to be heading for a satisfactory draw at home, the Swiss international’s team cracked in added time and thus conceded another infuriating defeat (1-2) in the league.
For Shaqiri, it was only his first goal in 13 matches, including ten as a starter. Last season, the Swiss offensive player scored seven times in 29 games with his MLS club. With only three wins in 17 games, the Chicago Fire is off to a bad start this season. Shaqiri’s training is in second-to-last place in the Eastern Conference, two points ahead of bottom-run Inter Miami, Argentina’s Lionel Messi’s new club.
Shaqiri vs Messi in October
Fortunately for Shaqiri and Chicago, there is still some time to try to widen the gap on Miami: the date of Messi’s big debut is not yet known, and everything suggests that the seven-time Ballon d’Or will not strengthen not the Florida team for several weeks.
The dates of July 21 against Cruz Azul (as part of the League Cup) or August 20 against Charlotte, at the start of the second phase of the regular season, have been mentioned to potentially correspond to Messi’s first match in MLS. Xherdan Shaqiri can however already circle the date of October 4 in his diary: Lionel Messi and Inter Miami will travel to Chicago in the league.
