Football – Jack Butland gets tangled up

Internationally, England goalkeepers sometimes have a reputation for making big mistakes. Robert Green’s hand fault at the 2010 World Cup is remembered, of the ball missed by Paul Robinson during the qualifiers for Euro 2008 or even David « Calamity » James meatballs. This misconception is likely to continue with the mistake of Jack Butland on Saturday.

In the third round of the FA Cup between Millwall and Crystal Palace, the English international goalkeeper totally missed a pass from his defender Marc Guéhi. Pressured by the pressing of two Millwall players, Butland tried to get out of it by dribbling them but was stung the ball. It was striker Benik Afobe, former Arsenal and Wolverhampton, who took advantage of this donation to score one of the easiest goals of his career. This error was, however, inconsequential for the London club.

Led 1-0 after 45 minutes, Patrick Vieira’s men were however able to catch up and take the lead in the second half thanks to goals from Michael Olise and Jean-Philippe Mateta. Usually a substitute in the league, Jack Butland has not scored many points with his coach at all.
