The defeat at the hands of the Montreal Canadiens was obviously not well digested by Philadelphia Flyers pilot Mike Yeo on Sunday night, and some of his players may have surprises this week.
The instructor came to the media somewhat irritated after a 4-3 loss in overtime. Still, with Habs defenseman Chris Wideman in jail and a one-goal lead late in the third period, the Flyers had every reason to believe in their chances of victory. However, they stupidly fell asleep by conceding a goal to Rem Pitlick, when goalkeeper Samuel Montembeault was sitting on the bench. Cole Caufield then settled the case for the home favourites, who had previously been unable to take advantage of a four-on-three power play.
Yeo has not been kind to his men at all.
“We will have to find a way for our hockey players to understand that they can play in their own way or even play to win, he mentioned in a press briefing, according to what the NHL.com site reported. Our defensive game is improving from match to match… that’s good. That’s what you have to do, what you’re supposed to do. But there is a way to play with the puck without committing turnovers and giving space and freebies to a skill formation. We still refuse to do so.”
Sunday’s meeting thus illustrated why Philadelphia occupies the basement of the Metropolitan section. The team has also lost twice to the Canadiens this season and they lead the Canadiens by seven points in the Eastern Conference standings.
« Right now, we’re in a deep ditch, » admitted captain Claude Giroux, who reached 900 career points. We find ways to lose. All night we played solid and got plenty of chances to score. We did a lot of great things. Except that in the end, we lost.
Change to be expected
Yeo admitted it: the portrait of his training could be very different in the next duel, scheduled for Thursday against the Nashville Predators. In addition to trade rumors, there are internal sanctions that the coach has the freedom to take.
« It’s cutting ice time, putting guys on the fourth line and cutting some guys out if we have to, » he said. I don’t know if we have enough space [sur la masse salariale] to recall players. However, there are veterans on whom we will also have to rely.
